Storm Drain Marking

Storm Drain Marking

Citizens for a Healthy Bay works with the City of Tacoma to reduce stormwater pollution in the south Puget Sound area. Through its Storm Drain Marking Program, CHB educates and reminds people that, in Tacoma, materials dumped down storm drains or catch basins are not treated and instead go directly into Commencement Bay through drains and outfalls.

With the help of volunteers, CHB and the City of Tacoma are working to mark every storm drain within the city limits. Markers stating “No Dumping, Drains to Puget Sound” are glued next to the drains to caution people against dumping materials into the drain system.

Storm Drain Marking events are held each summer.  Participants include schools, churches, scout troops and families as well as individuals who just want to make a difference in their community.  They come from all over Tacoma and the surrounding area.  CHB also provides re-usable stencils to those who live outside of Tacoma but also want to mark their neighborhood’s drains.  All that is needed is a can of spray paint and the desire to get involved.  Tacoma residents, community groups, families and businesses can learn more about how to reduce stormwater pollution and help mark Tacoma’s storm drains by contacting Jeanine Riss at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
